We are back from our summer vacation to Washington D.C. This was one of those vacations that was truly worth the time and expense. I like to think we timed it perfectly in terms of DS#1 and DS#2. I know that DD and DS#3 didn't get that much out of it, but the older boys did, and DS#1 was particularly interested in everything we did.
I probably should have tried to make various small posts via email like my lovely wife did on
her blog, but, well, I didn't ;). We had a laptop with us but didn't use it for uploading the pictures or any other "internet fun" --we have the iPhones for that. I have some pictures on the family website, if you need the site, email me. I thought I would try to post a few additional pictures (as in, pictures I didn't post to the website) and some brief (okay, as brief as possible) explanations.

Our first day of the actual vacation we walked from the hotel all the way down to the Lincoln Memorial and then we walked by the Korean War Memorial and the World War I (DC-more about that in a second), World War II and Washington Monument on the way to see the White House (from the outside only, we would have needed to sign up for tickets last December to be able to tour there) and on to the Smithsonian American History Museum (which we only saw a little of). This picture is the kids taking a break for some ice cream and frozen lemonade. It was hot and we did walk quite a bit.
Oh, lest I forget, we also went to the National Aquarium our first day as well.

This is the Washington DC World War I Memorial. Really, it is only for/about the soldiers from the Washington DC area that died in WWI. There is no true national WWI Memorial (at least none that I know of-correct me if I am wrong). When you consider the number of people still alive that remember this conflict and the people that fought there, well, you can begin to guess that it will be some time before anyone collects enough money to create a memorial that does those soldiers justice.
I am beginning to see that this is either going to be one HUGE post, or I will have to split it up a bit. We'll see how much longer the recently awakened DS#3 lets me type.

Our second day we headed to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. We had this strange idea that we would spend a few hours there and then go "finish" at the National Museum of American History. Well, this was the day that made it completely clear that these museums are simply so huge that they are entire day affairs. We had a blast here, particularly the big boys. DS#1 probably went through the museum the slowest, stopping to read almost everything he came across. It was amazing to see how interesting animals, dinosaur bones, rocks, etc. were to the boys and, sometimes, DD.

The next day was the National Air and Space Museum. Okay, it was boy heaven here, for all 3 boys (okay all 4, I loved this too). Honestly, while she did get tired, DD really enjoyed it as well. We actually joined one of the free tours with a Docent that gave a lot of background information on the space program and the Wright Brothers that only DD and DS#3 failed to enjoy. DS#3 and DD are much more excited about hands-on activities, fortunately, all of the museums have some sort of area with hands-on activities.

The day after this was Tuesday, and we went back to the National Museum of American History and pretty much spent the whole day there. There are several hands-on areas there so DD and DS#3 had a good time (as did the big boys). DS#1 really soaked up the museum--in Texas they have American History and Government in 8th grade so virtually everything tied in with material he studied over the past year. Personally, I was thrilled to see how much he knew and how excited he was to learn new details.
Okay, time is running short here so I will have to continue this in another post. Basically, we had a great vacation.
