Last night my dear wife and I went to the middle school with DS#2 for the Student-Parent orientation. Wow, they really want us to pick classes early. He doesn't finish 5th grade for almost 8 months and they expect him to pick electives for next year.
The truth is, 6th graders don't really get that many elective choices, and he isn't interested in Band, Choir, or Orchestra so that pretty much cuts his choices in half. With the core classes and the required PE/Health semesters he has 2 class slots left each semester for electives. His choices are likely to end up being PE (he needs an extra semester sometime during his 3 years of middle school), Debate, Art, and Theater Arts.
Right now he sounds set on going to the middle school we feed into, but there is a magnet middle school focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) that we thing is completely in line with his interests. DS#2 is both shy, and social. He likes "playing" with friends, but he is shy and it takes him a while to make new friends sometimes. His friends will all be going to the "local" middle school so that is the way he is leaning right now. We'll have to see what happens after he gets an opportunity to spend a day at STEM middle school.
The other news yesterday is that DD lost another tooth. When I looked at her teeth in the morning I told her that a particular tooth was very loose and if it didn't fall out during the day I would pull it after school. There was no need, it fell out at school. She has another that will come out in the next day or two (probably tonight when I get a chance to grab it ;)).
